Mounting interest for the Velux 5 Oceans Race
Chester Race Week wrapped up another successful event on the East Coast with great racing on the water and many interesting features on shore. Amy Minnikin, a 13-year old skipper from RNSYS even appeared on a CBC interview as the youngest skipper in the event and the only woman skipper in her division. In her first regatta, she raced her Ranger 30, that she refurbished herself, to a respectable 7th place in her group.
Interest is mounting for the Velux 5 Oceans race with its recent starring role in movie theaters across the country. The Hollywood blockbuster 'Charlie St. Cloud' features a story based on the oldest ocean race in the world features footage of American Brad Van Liew's old Open 50 Tommy Hilfiger, which Brad sailed to victory in Class 2 in the 2002-3 Around Alone race. The same race where Canadian offshore racer Derek Hatfield pitch poled his own Open 40 while rounding Cape Horn. Both Derek and Brad will be reunited in October as they participate in the Velux 5 Oceans race in their ECO60 yachts; Derek with a new (to him) Spirit of Canada which has proven itself taking line honors in the recent Route Halifax St. Pierre race, while Brad is launching his bright yellow Le Pingouin in the days to come in Charleston, SC. This promises to be an interesting race to follow this Fall!
Armel Le Cleac'h is still leading the Solitaire du Figaro fleet following the start of leg 4 yesterday in Ireland. Skippers were apparently quite eager to leave the grey skies of Kinsale behind as two general recalls were called by the race committee. Unfortunately, Swiss Bernard Stamm (Chemin�e Poujoulat) and French Matthieu Girolet (Entreprendre) collided seriously between the starts and caused sufficient damage for both of them to abandon the race. The remaining 42 racers are heading to Cherbourg, France under challenging weather conditions.
Congratulations to Canadian Laser sailor Mike Leigh for his Bronze Medal award at Skandia Sail for Gold! This finish combined with performances over the course of the year has also seen Mike finish third overall in the World Cup standings for the year.
This coming week, we'll be keeping an eye on the CORK OCR Regatta in Kingston, ON, the International 8 Meter World Cup at RCYC in Toronto, ON and the 2010 Optimist Canadian Championships at RHYC in Hamilton, ON. Stay tuned for stories and results.

Chester Race Week concludes in fine style

The beautiful little village of Chester played host to another wonderful Race Week. The racing concluded with the last classes crossing the finish lines in the late afternoon and the crews anxiously waited to learn the results on the boards at Chester Yacht Club. Many of the boats sail in handicap fleets which have to be calculated before the results are final.... [more]

The 2010 MLA Muskoka Laser Sailing Championship was hosted by Kettles Sailing Club, East Bay, Lake Muskoka in conjunction with the Ontario Laser Masters (age 35 & over) on August 14 and 15. The last 6 weeks have been filled with activity with at least one event on each weekend. There have been half a dozen regattas, big and small for all skill levels, 8 Harbour Master races, and 7 Toronto Friday night club series races. Sam Julien has had gourmet sandwiches and cookies for sale during Chester Race Week. Sam is the son of Laura and Didier Julien, owners of a patisserie up the street from the Chester Yacht Club. For the past three years, Sam puts in his orders at the restaurant, arrives down at the yacht club with a cooler and umbrella in time to be at the entrance to the dock when the sailors leave for the day.... Another British Champion in Toronto this weekend

There was another British champion in Toronto on Sunday. The 8 Meter yacht Lafayette owned by Murdoch McKillop of the Royal Northern Yacht Club in Rhu and crewed by fellow members captained by Allan Manuel won the North American Championship sailed on the waters of Lake Ontario in a five race series. Mike Leigh Claims Bronze at Skandia Sail

The Laser Medal race had Canadian fans up and cheering as David Wright won the race boosting himself to seventh overall while Mike Leigh fought gamely throughout the race leading at times and eventually finishing sixth to secure a Bronze medal in the Skandai Sail for Gold event. This finish combined with performances over the year has also seen Mike finish third overall in the World Cup standings.... [more]

Re-Launch of the WHIM, a C-Class Sloop in Chester, Nova Scotia

The re-launch of the WHIM, a 1937 C-Class sloop, that was designed and built in Chester, Nova Scotia by the late Joseph Reuben Heisler was a classy affair today. In attendance were several present owners of C-Class sloops that are still sailing, as well as Alberta Baker, who donated the yacht to the Maritime Museum in 2006. On the third day of racing in the Chester Race Week regatta, the Principal Race Officer Andreas Josenhans reported from the Alpha course committee boat that the conditions today were the best. The yachts started in medium airs of 8 to 10 knots from the south west and the breeze stiffened to 15 knots in the afternoon.... [more]
