Dear fleet,
I have a question about a situation that arose last night in the last race.
I am doing a penalty turn clockwise from close hauled on port. When I am
almost at the end of it (i.e. just went past head to wind onto port, but
haven't gotten to close-hauled yet), an unrelated starboard boat has to bear
away to avoid me. Did I fault them too, or am I considered an obstruction
until I am done with my penalty turn?
More background. This incident happened 20 feet from the finish line so I
could not delay my penalty turn without crossing the line. I was close to
the boat end, which was favored, which is why the second boat was coming
towards me.
If I should not have done my penalty turn because other boats would be
wanting to be where I was by the time I was done with the penalty turn, then
what should I have done? (Obviously what I should have done was keep my eyes
outside the boat and not fault the first boat...)
Thanks,
Jorge
