Vanguardians,
Some of us own sail or power boats, and there’s legislation up for a vote
which will help all of us who do. And as everyone knows, the spill has
caused issues for wildlife all over the bay, but also for those of us who
keep boats in the water.
I’m volunteering for Baykeepers, and my assigned task is getting the word
out to fellow boat owners about what to do about oil in your marina or on
your boat. See the attached flyer.
The other thing is also environmental in nature, and it involves telling
your elected representatives how to vote on an environmental bill.
Basically, a bill is coming down the pike which will remove an exemption to
an EPA requirement for pleasure boats. If it passes it will require all of
us to get EPA permits if our boat has even a bilge pump. The legislation
itself is good, as it addresses large commercial ships practice of
discharging water ballast which introduces non-native and destructive
aquatic species into bays and harbors.
My understanding is that the NBF has put forward another bill which will
maintain our exemption from having to get EPA permits for our boats.
Basically, if you don’t like spending time at places like the DMV, you
should support this bill. Doing so doesn’t hurt the environment, and
actually saves some trees.

This is a request for both boaters and boating organizations to take

As recreational boaters, we need to get Congress to pass legislation to
exempt
recreational boaters from the onerous EPA permitting scheme as it relates to
waste water
discharge and water runoff.
Here is a simple, easy way to let your Washington Representative and Senator
know that
you want them to support the legislative exemption to this onerous
regulation.
1. Point your web browser to www.boatblue.-org/takeaction.-aspx
2. On the left half of the site you will find a box asking you to enter your
zip code, please
do so.
3. Scroll down to the section "Action Alert" and in that box you will find a
link to "Click
Here", please click on it.
4. You will arrive at the "Action Alert" portion which offers you a choice
of delivery
methods of your message. The email option will be highlighted. if it is not,
select it.
5. You will see form letters prepared for your Congressman and you Senator.
The letters
may be edited, if you so choose.
6. Fill in the "Sender" information.
7. Click on "Send Message" and you will have let your representatives in
Congress know
that this issue is important to you and that you wish them to support this
legislation.
8. OR DO NOTHING AND LOOK FORWARD TO THE HASSLE OF GETTING WATER DISCHARGE
PERMITS IN EVERY STATE OF THE UNION, DEPENDING ON HOW YOU USE YOUR BOAT.
