Hi all,
Tonight's forecast is calling for a strong Southerly, which can make for
some nasty conditions in the cove. A couple things to consider before
launching tonight:
*Don't launch unless you're 100% confident you can handle the
conditions.*Southerly's at TI are
*very* shifty (think auto-tacks) and have the potential for large, confused
waves coming around Yerba Buena island. The first night of the season isn't
the time to test yourself, in particular during a Southerly. As a point of
reference, one of the strongest boats in last year's team racing fleet
found themselves pinned against the pier in similar conditions last year.
If you're unsure of your abilities in these conditions, please consider
holding off until next Thursday.
*Launching will take longer than usual.* You'll be launching upwind, so it
will take longer than usual. Don't get in line at 6:25 with your main down
and expect to make the 6:30 start. (If I try this, you're encouraged to
yell at me...)
*Docking is hazardous.* You'll need to dock by a lee shore, which can be
sketchy with wind, waves, and a slippery dock. I would recommend sailing
upwind into the lee of Yerba Buena island first and taking down your main
in the light winds there. Sailing down to the dock under your jib is a lot
easier, and means you can get right on your dolly when you hit the dock
because your main is already down.
