Sure lets try it tomorrow....but maybe the round the end if you are over at 1 minute might help but not be so extreme.

Boats down the line are blocked...yes thats true....but its sort of part of the starting strategy...always has been.

Actually the boats at the pin end need all the help they can get because they often get pinned to the left side of the course and have to deal with being on the deadly port tack layline to the weather mark.

Ahoy All,

Sarah Sent me an email (see below) and I thought I might give my thoughts.
After all, this is the one thing I do like about email. Would like your
thoughts in return.

A: thanks for the kind words re: running races. I am a USSA Regional Race
Officer and Senior Race Officer and am going for Nat RO. Likewise I am near
compleating the paperwork for USSA Judge. And yes, I also race boats. I have
an Islander Bahama, a Plastic Classic, and have raced Farallon Clippers to
Solings. Own a Laser but hardly sail it to my shame. Any way, the V15 Thurs
nite races are a means for me to practice my RC management craft and no
better group of test subjects could be desired. You are ALL good racers,
seem to know the rules, and are agressive. That is why I mess around with
the rules a little.

B: Rule 29.1, your SIs and Appendix Q say several things. 29.1 and SIs use
flag and noise. SI has hailing but not reqd and no redress if I blow it or
you don't hear it. Q has no flag and hailing of boat number or some
identifier. In reality you all are crowding the line and if I can call you,
you go back. If I don't call then you "fooled me" and got away with it. In
effect, I am now the umpire and all responsibility goes to the RC boat which
is sort of contrary to the rules but not totally. After a start I see an
awful lot of "eyes" looking back for a flag or sound. To make it worse it
seems very popular in bigger boats for the RC do call everything on the VHF,
though I have heard comments that that seems to be a west coast thing. We
tried this idea in the Bay Champs and racers were quite responsible and came
back when over early.

C: Fair? The boats at the far end of the line are covered by the closer ones
and almost always are not spotted. Maybe if your bow is out ahead at 2 sec
and I can get you then I can guess you were early. A pin boat makes it much
better but so would winning the lottery, both not very likely.

Anyway, let's see what happens this Thursday and at beer time we can vote or
something.

Also, I have been researching the controversy about port-stbd and
obsructions and would be glad to say a few words on that subject.

Sea ya Thursday.

Super

Hi John,

Thanks for running our races this summer. Its been great. I think the gate
and the offset are helpful for crowded mark roundings.

Ive been out of the loop, but I spoke to catherine tonight about the
individual recall proceedure, and I am curious why you feel this change to
the sailing instructions is necessary.

I am well aware that is it in the rules that the race committee has no
obligation to call sail numbers, but in practice it is the way it is done
for good reason.

It seems like you have been doing a pretty good job of calling boats, but
perhaps you feel like youve been missing too many and it isnt fair?

Please let me into the loop. I have a feeling that this will be a very
unpopoular change to the sailing instructions.

Thanks again for all the good races,

-----Original Message-----
From: Catherine King [mailto:
