Oh well, another fleet email after all, hope none of you are feeling spammed...
Mike Kennedy has proposed a modification to the SI's, to unrestrict the Start/Finish line (see bottom of this thread).
Our PRO Doug McVae would be fine with making that change, so are the two organizers of the Olson fleet (the other cc:s).
As I see it, the good thing about unrestricting the S/F line is it makes passing easier, and now we are up to 23 boats that will be important.
The bad thing is it apparently requires the RC to wait until all boats have finished before starting the next race, which will prolong the proceedings somewhat. (I don't think they have the crew available to put the start line to leeward and the finish to windward, which otherwise might be preferable).
Please get back to me ASAP whether you would like the start/finish line restricted or not; if there is a preponderance of the votes for changing it (i.e. more than half, but don't hold me to a specific percentage) we will do so and will inform the fleet by all appropriate means (including yet another email, I'm afraid).
To avoid escalating the spam factor, please just reply to me (not all), unless you have more cogent arguments than Mike and I put forth and want to share them.

If you want to unrestrict the st/fin line, it is ok with me. We will just wait till both fleets finish before starting next race.

Jan,
It seems like Mike has a good point. What do you think? BTW, incredible job on the turnout. I am very impressed.

Hi Jan
I notice that the Sailing Instructions has the Start/Finish line set to weather of the leeward mark and is restricted. As you may have experienced in past regattas, this has the effect of creating a significant obstacle in the middle of the racecourse, severely limiting the playing field. Rather than playing shifts and covering competitors, boats are forced to sail around the start/finish line, limiting tactical options. In a big fleet like we'll have this weekedn, this will take away many lanes, and lead to parades around the racecourse with no passing opportunities, decisions to make about covering those behind, etc. etc. For a Championship regatta, I beleive that all tactical options should be on the table, with a wide open playing field.
A restricted starting line may be necessary at a regatta with many classes of handicap boats where the race committee may be confused by different bots in different classes crossing the start/finish line when not starting or finishing; however, there are only 2 classes, both one design, racing this weekend, and I'm sure we'll have a very capable RC that will be able to keep all the participants straight.
I strongly recommend that the Start/Finish line either be moved to leeward of the leeward mark, or that the Start/Finish line not be restricted. If the Start/Finish line were moved to leeward of the leeward mark, then the current courses (which all finish upwind) could be maintined by having the finish at the weather mark, and the markset boat take finishes at the top of the race course. If that stretches the RC too thin, then the Start/Finish could be left in place, bit not restructed, so that the boats could use the entire racecourse (especially imprtant in a big fleet like we'll have this weekend).
Thanks
Mike
