[Santana 22] 2008 Spinnaker Series

I had understood from Pete that the RYC had already indicated that we
could play in the Big Daddy on Saturday during the course racing portion
of the event but am amenable to replacing that day with Knox/Bonito
which sounds fun to me too.

I'm kind of on board with you Michael, but you'll have to make Bonito go
even faster than she is already to get in Big Daddy, unless I can get us
an exemption (which may be possible); here's the description from the
NOR:

The Big Daddy Regatta is a PHRF, One Design and IRC regatta, open to
mono-hulled keel boats with a Northern California PHRF rating of 174 and
below.

I kind of liked Knox/Bonita when I did it, we could put that in the
first series in place of Big Daddy, a sort of "put your nose out the
Gate" intro for those who don't want to go all the way tot he Farallones
in the shorthanded part.

I too like putting the kite up aboard Bonito in a blow and, for
"distance" races, sailing without one really isn't an option in my
opinion.

Personally I would like to see our class' spinnaker series
consist of the following races:

Big Daddy (course racing on Saturday only)
	Vallejo Race
2nd Half Opener (distance race on Saturday only)
Great Pumpkin (course racing on Saturday only)

This is two days of around the cans racing with spinnakers and
three days of distance racing with spinnakers / genoas, a nice balance
in my opinion.

I would not suggest mixing double / short handed racing into our
"crewed" spinnaker series. However, it might be fun to have yet a third
set of races constituting a series made up of these types of events.
For example, the Double Handed Lightship Race, Double Handed Farallons
Race, Three Bridge Fiasco and Vallejo 1/2.

I would ask that the Plastic Classis not be counted in our
spinnaker series as it always seems to conflict with the Lipton Cup. A
series that I am honored to represent Encinal Yacht Club in that
typically draws several Tunas from our Fleet.

Thanks for you consideration of my input.

I would really like to get an active spinnaker series going
again in our fleet next year. It is fun to go out and pop the chute up
in 25 knots and come surfing in underneath the gate. I miss it and I
know other people in our class do too. After the excellent turnout at
nationals, I'd like to see if we can make something more substantial
happen next year.

It seems that this could be an opportunity to fill out some of
the year when the YRA series isn't happening and things are a little
slower. Below is a proposed schedule:

Early March: Big Daddy (3 races) - Southampton. We would not be
allowed to do the pursuit race because we are too slow and the day is
still too short at that time of the year. However, the RYC people said
the saw no reason why we couldn't have a one design start for the buoy
racing on Saturday.

Late March: Double Handed Lightship (1 race) - Out the gate.

Early May: Vallejo (1 race) - Long, recquires knowledge of
currents and wind to win. Traditionally highly attended.

Late October: Great Pumpkin (3 races) - This race has
traditionally been strongly attended. Held at Southampton shoals, the
wind is often light.

	Potential Additional Races:

Three Bridge Fiasco - Mid January, often don't finish because of
wind.
	Plastic Classic
2nd 1/2 Opener - Late July. Nice to have a few races when it
is really blowing.
Vallejo 1/2 - Fall, good attendance in 2006.

I feel that there is room for an additional race or two in the
above schedule. One option is to pay regatta pro to hold somethng for
us, or to run an event off the bay view boat club course in the south
bay.

If you are interested, please reply to the list with your
thoughts.

	Thanks,

	Pete
