[Santana 22] 2008 Spinnaker Series

Really good input Pat. I wasn't aware that there were so many
opportunities to race short handed in the Bay but, now knowing there
are, I would like to see a short handed series made up of just those in
the Bay races.

Spinnaker Sailors,

Before the spinnaker schedule sort of fell apart, I think we had a good
series going. However, participation was never good and was spotty at
best.

1.	Vallejo Opener
2.	2nd Half Opener (Saturday In-the-Bay Race only)
3.	Plastic Classic, but I agree with Michael that the conflict with

the Lipton has always been a problem. Too bad the BVBC moved the date
so it conflicts. I'd substitute one of the HDA races - which would make
both of the following part of the series.
4.	Either HDA Island Tour or Knox Bonita - or both.
5.	Pumpkin Saturday races (but I'm hesitant this time around since
I
had too much trouble with the RYC registration/pay program for the
Nationals -- I'll probably sit this year's Pumpkin out)

I don't think the Big Daddy is suited for Santanas and would not vote
for it.

The SSS is always happy to set up classes for 5 or more boats, so a
short handed Santana Series is always possible: 3-Bridge Fiasco, In-
the-Bay, East Bay Estuary, Vallejo 1 - 2 are all races inside SF Bay.

I'm hesitant to put ocean races in, however. I think ocean races call
for experience and understanding - they are not "pack an extra sandwich
and go." I wouldn't want someone who's not prepared to get into
trouble. I think boats need to be set up right, skippers/crew need to
be prepared/safety equipment needs to be in place. Even the lightship
race(s) can be a test if conditions are rough. The last couple of years
things have been pretty quiet out there, but I've either opted to not go
at the last minute or turned back when things became too much about a
third of the time over the 30+ years I've been racing out the Gate. I
don't want to see an untried Santana get into serious trouble.
