Wayne,

I wouldn't go thicker than 5/16 on the spin halyard.  Also, the length of
the halyard depends on where you will launch the kite from and where you
plan on cleating the halyard.  If you are hoisting from the mast it will be
shorter, if led aft it will need to be longer.  You can launch from a turtle
on the deck or from the companionway.  I recommend the latter and hoisting
from the mast if you are racing.  If you are cruising go with whatever suits
your fancy.
