As a Vic e Commodore of the Elkhorn Yacht Club in Moss LAnding CA I
would like to congratulate Monterey Penninsula Yacht Club in winning
the highly valued Veeder Cup. Veeder Cup Trophy (1963) - This is a
two-day match racing event usually sailed in September. Basically, it
is a contest to crown the racing champion of Monterey Bay. Mrs. Grace
Veeder, an active member of the Stillwater Yacht Club, was the
originator in conjunction with her grandson, Tim Condon, a past
commodore of the Stillwater Yacht Club. Only Carmel, Santa Cruz, Moss
Landing, and Monterey Bay yacht clubs are eligible to participate in
this challenge cup. The annual inter Monterey Event held in last
years winning venue this year the Veeder Cup challenge was held in
Santa Cruz. This year the series of 5 races were sailed in
Santana 22's. On Saturday with brisk winds 10 - 15 knots from the
north. Santa Cruz won races 2 and 3. Sunday the course was set west
of Light house Pt. in light easterly winds. Monterey took both races
on Sunday and won the series 3 to 2. So next year the race will be
staged in Monterey. Hope my is next year Elkhorn Yacht club will put
up a challenge to Santa Cruz and get involved in 2010. It was nice
to see Santa Cruz use Ernie Rideout's boat Maybe #19 sailed by Alex
Crowley, Jim and Joe Crum. Monterey used Mizzen #453.
