I have the same cracks on my boat, and have had them for years. My
hull number is 66, and I think it was built in 1966 but I'm not
sure. I hear that there is a new type of epoxy that they put on
iron keels to keep them from rusting, and that it might keep this from
happening. but you never know. I'm not an engineer, but from
looking at the configuration of the hull and keel you have a non-flexible
iron keel flange bolted to a flexible fiberglass hull, and the gap
between the edge of the flange and the hull changes with the working of
the boat. The hull seems to have a pretty good size metal plate
molded into the fiberglass of the hull, and the bolts go through the
plate. The gap between the keel flange and the hull is probably
stretched and compressed even when the boat is on a trailer, since it is
resting on the keel when it is on the trailer and subject to any bumps
the trailer goes over. My intuitive feeling is that trailering the
boat on a bumpy road might even flex the joint more than sailing it in
anything less than really choppy seas.

I do not have these. Somebody did a killer job fairing my keel into
the hull at some point. So, they can be eliminated. I have no
idea what type of layup was done unfortunately. I have seen this on
many other boats though.

Bonito, number 811 has the same cracks around her keel to hull

Has everyone experienced these cracks near the keel. My boat has
not even been in the water yet
I don't blame you for being a little
concerned, but this crack is truly a harmless cosmetic crack that is very
common with the type of keel installation used on the Santana 22. This
method of construction is also used on Star boats and Cal 20s. It is not
uncommon.
The keel has a rectangular plate on the top
that is placed into a rectangular hollow in the bottom of the boat. (Sort
of like the T-shaped drawing below.) The hollow in the bottom of the boat
is slightly larger than the rectangular plate, so we fill the void with
putty. The slightest keel movement, while being trailered or while
sailing, causes the rigid putty to crack. You can fair and putty the
crack to make it look better, but doing so won't make any real difference
in the speed potential of the boat, or in the structural integrity. The
crack will eventually reappear. The putty is only filler – it has nothing
to do with attaching the keel to the hull.
I just sailed on Santana 22 #803 in the
Santana 22 championships in San Francisco Bay . We brought the boat to
the factory right before the regatta to add a couple of pieces of racing
hardware, and we took the opportunity to sand and fair the crack. I think
this is the third time we have done this to this particular boat. It is
routine maintenance for a Santana 22.
see quite a few new boats on the Bay in the next few years.
