TI Tune-Up Notes:
Hi everyone. Just to review the sound signals:
1st Sound: 5 min to go
2nd Sound : 4 min to go
3rd Sound : 1 min to go
4th Sound: START!
There will be a short beat to a port rounding of a
windward mark, followed by a downwind finish. PLEASE MONITOR
CHANNEL 71 so that you can receive notification shortly before
each 5 min sequence commences. To keep things moving in a
timely manner, remain in the vicinity of the start line after
your finish.
I recommend delaying your final tack for the line,
whether starting on port or starboard, so as to preserve your
final option as long as possible. This gives you time to make
a better assessment of where most of the other boats might be
before committing yourself. Conversely, if you tack for the
line too early or from too far off, you have no more
options if something unexpected develops. It also becomes
progressively harder with distance from the line to get your
timing right.
It's worthwhile to caution against barging, a violation
in which a windward boat at either end of the line forces a
leeward boat to fall off in order to gain space for themselves
to squeeze in between that boat and the port buoy or the
committee boat, depending upon which end of the line you
have chosen for your start. If you are the leeward boat in
this situation, you have the right to head up and "close the
door"subject to to two limitations:
1) It must be clear that the barging boat is going to
respond by heading up (you may not force a collision), and
2) If applicable, you do not do so in such a manner that
the barging boat has no room to yield without
banging into the committee boat (my boat!).
See you tomorrow.

Dear Tuna skippers,

Frank Lawler of "Tackful" will teach us the
ins-and-outs of starts in our famous Spring Tuna
Tune-up. This event is for novice skippers who
want to practice some starts, as well as for
experienced folks who want to get their crews
ready for the season. It's also one of the most
fun events of the year!

On Sat April 5th we'll put out a starting line
with a short course in beautiful Clipper Cove to
practice as many starts as we can fit in. Start at
11, about 6 starts and very short races (~ 5 min
each), and then we'll break for a pot luck lunch
during which Frank will give some feedback. Then,
it's back on the water for a few more starts and
we'll be done before 3 pm.

You can come over and bring your Tuna, or just
come over and we'll find you a boat to crew on.
Please bring crew and/or interested other skippers
or friends.

Please let us know 1) if you're coming, 2) if
you're bringing your boat, 3) how many crew you're
bringing.

It would be great to have someone volunteer to
take some pictures and write a short piece for
NorCal sailing to give the fleet some
advertisement. Also, if this date doesn't work for
a whole lot of people we can postpone to April 19
after the Wheeler regatta, so let me know if
that's the case.

In the past years we've had 8-10 boats out for
this event and it's a great way to get toknow the
fleet and do some informal races. As always,
please let me know if you have any questions!

Cheers,
