[Santana 22] Fw: RE: Here they are

Bonito, number 811 has the same cracks around her keel to hull flange.
They're ugly but, I have resigned myself to their inevitability and
don't believe they detract from the boat's structural integrity.

Has everyone experienced these cracks near the keel. My boat has not
even been in the water yet

Wayne,

I don't blame you for being a little concerned, but this crack is truly
a harmless cosmetic crack that is very common with the type of keel
installation used on the Santana 22. This method of construction is also
used on Star boats and Cal 20s. It is not uncommon.

The keel has a rectangular plate on the top that is placed into a
rectangular hollow in the bottom of the boat. (Sort of like the T-shaped
drawing below.) The hollow in the bottom of the boat is slightly larger
than the rectangular plate, so we fill the void with putty. The
slightest keel movement, while being trailered or while sailing, causes
the rigid putty to crack. You can fair and putty the crack to make it
look better, but doing so won't make any real difference in the speed
potential of the boat, or in the structural integrity. The crack will
eventually reappear. The putty is only filler - it has nothing to do
with attaching the keel to the hull.

I just sailed on Santana 22 #803 in the Santana 22 championships in San
Francisco Bay. We brought the boat to the factory right before the
regatta to add a couple of pieces of racing hardware, and we took the
opportunity to sand and fair the crack. I think this is the third time
we have done this to this particular boat. It is routine maintenance for
a Santana 22.

The championships, by the way, drew 24 entries, and were sailed out of
Richmond Yacht Club. The Santana 22 class is enjoying are really
exciting rejuvenation on the Bay. I think we will see quite a few new
boats on the Bay in the next few years.
