Mine's about 1'1/4" I think, and it's pretty bendy. It's been straightened out over the trailer tire a couple of times but I like that it's nice and light. I carry the spin pole down below as a backup (thus negating the weight savings of the skinnier whisker pole-I never said it made sense). There is a fair amount of compression, but the biggest danger is overzealous foredeck crew mangling it in a gybe.
The bolt through the middle was dreamed up when we noticed the pole getting shorter and shorter during the practice day before the 07 Nationals. Some of the best boat mods are made the morning of the regatta

Subject: Re: [Santana 22] Whisker pole
Two things I recall from pole shopping: The sheeting angle with
cabin-top leads puts the pole under a lot of compression, and you
need the "heavy duty" (1-7/8") pole. We felt the 1-1/4" pole we
bought first was too bendy even for cruising. The plastic ends on the
later Forespar are not IMHO as smooth as the older metal ones.
Also, all that compression makes adjustables marginal. Which makes
Mike's idea of a bolt sound good, especially if applied to an older
pole that is had cheaply because the adjustment doesn't work anymore.
