[Santana 22] Tuna Digest, Vol 156, Issue 1

We had lewmar 8's on a boat when I was a kid. They used standard handles.
The socket on top of the winch is stainless and the handles we used were
aluminum or bronze. The point here is the stainless is harder and stronger
than the handle, so unlikely the top of the winch is buggered. How about
sending pictures?

Most winches have a 3/4 eight sided hex on top. If a locking handle is put
in the first hundred or so times the lock may need to be put in an unlock
position to get it in the winch head. Hope this helps.
