As far as a compass its good to have as a back up but I would invest in a basic GPS. It can get you home in the dark or fog with greater precision, and gives you speed and can even give you charting, for as little as $150.
As far as reefing, Santana's are pretty much factory reefed unless you plan to be sailing in 30 plus knots for long periods of time. I have owned my Santana since 87" and have sailed if for many hours in 30+ knots without a problem. It's a great heavy weather boat.
Happy sailing,,,you have picked a great first boat, just have your standing rigging checked by a pro before any heavy weather sailing, it could save you buying a new mast. They can also show you how to put in a reef if you still want one.
