Good Afternoon All:
Years ago some in the fleet were most kind in helping me learn out how to
sail our S22. Alas, we entered the Nationals just recently and before
breaking down found ourselves at the back of the fleet every race.
I think I’ve narrowed down most of our problems.
1) Terrible tactics at the start – me.
2) Terrible tactics going to weather – me.
3) Old sails – me
4) Four people on board – Not sure that was a problem as many of the
boats in front of us had 4 people.
5) Terrible tactics at the weather mark– me
6) Down wind.
a. On rare occasion we’d get to the weather mark mid-fleet and see 4
to 6 boats+ pass us downwind.
b. Problems:
i. I need someone to go through the step by step process, in writing,
on how to fly the pole. We’re having a horrible time getting the thing
hooked up every time.
1. What’s the exact process?
2. I noticed that most the boats stored their downwind pole on the
boom. How does that work?
ii.
Once we round the windward mark we:
1. Ease the backstays
2. Ease the main halyard
3. Try and get the pole out – most boats pass us when we struggle
with that.
4. Position one of the crew on the bow to put weight forward.
7) Terrible tactics at the leeward mark – me.
8) More terrible tactics going to weather the second time. – me.
9) Horrible finishes – me.
10) Can someone Heeeeellllp? Mostly with the setting of the downwind
pole, but I’ll take any help offered.
With regards,
Jim
